Food Trip: The Perfect Birthday Steak

Early this month, I celebrated my 18th birthday…again (for the nth time). My wife and I really wanted something special. At the same time we were both craving for steaks for some time. For almost a year I have been reading about a place called Elbert’s Steak Room from the different threads of the Philippine Macintosh User’s Group (PhilMUG). Elbert is one of the administrators of PhilMUG. I visited the restaurant’s website and became really interested in going there. I told my wife about it and she became interested. Soon, interest led to craving. We kept on telling ourselves that we need to find time and the best occasion to go. As my birthday was coming, we finally decided it was the perfect time. … Read entire article »

Underpass

It was quite late in the evening. The distinct sound of a woman’s high heels striking the hard tiles can be heard echoing just in front of him. It sounded as if she wanted to get in and out of the place as quickly as she could. The young man wondered why. The young man decided to slightly quicken his pace as he walked down the steps leading to the pedestrian underpass. … Read entire article »

You’re Cooking!?!

The title of this article is the most probable reaction I’d get from anyone who knew me before I got married, if I ever tell them that I cook. During those times, I had no idea that I’d be cooking. My parents and other members of the household would often even tease me that I didn’t even know how to boil eggs. This is a fact of course, because I may even have trouble boiling water. But with a smile, I’d always tell them that as long as there’s some sort of instruction manual (a.k.a. a cookbook), I’ll be able to pull it off. Deep inside, my mind was telling me, “Yeah, right! Let’s see you try it, buster.” Of course, I was intelligent enough not to take that challenge. … Read entire article »

Switching to Macs

Finally, after a few months of thinking of about it, my wife and I decided to switch to Macs from — no not Windows — but from Linux. We actually switched way back in April, but it’s only now that I’ve had time to write about it. We are a different breed in a sense as most switchers are coming off Windows. I had decided as early as 2003 that I have had enough of Windows. I started with DOS in 1987 (I was in second year high school at the time) and eventually moved up to Windows 95 in 1996, Windows 98 in 1999, and XP in 2003. … Read entire article »

Sleepy Dilemna

My eyelids keep on closing Despite my efforts to keep from dozing The more I try to keep my eyes wide open The drowsiness leads my jaw to drop wide open No matter how hard I stretch out my arms I feel Dreamland calling to me with it’s charms It seems that any minute now I’ll fall asleep I don’t even have time to count some sheep. … Read entire article »

Nearing the End….

Our PC is nearing the end of it’s life. It has served me well for 5 years (and within those years, has served my wife and me for nearly 2). Hopefully, my wife and I can extract our data soon. The face is really starting to fade (monitor has lost brightness). There are times that it barely has enough strength to do anything (power supply doesn’t want to power up). The memory is going (memory module is acting up). The poor guy can’t even read it’s own handwriting (hard disk is failing). My wife and I are planning on getting a Mac for our next computer. It’s really a different breed of computer from what we’ve heard, read, and seen. It doesn’t get sick (no viruses) or attacked (no security holes) … Read entire article »

Blackout

After tropical storm “Milenyo” (international name “Xangsane”) hit last week, Metro Manila and other affected areas were plunged in darkness…well, at least during the night. That’s because most power lines were downed by fallen billboards and trees. Of course, some power cables got stolen during the height of the storm, believe it or not, but that’s another story. Anyway, all of this has resulted in zero electricty for most of us. For the more privileged people (a.k.a rich people), they all trooped down to the nearest hotel to spend a night or two. The hotel was running on generators, but who cares, right? It’s an excuse to stay at hotel rather that newly built mansion. Others preferred to just spend their day at the mall with gazillions of other people trying to … Read entire article »

Through A Storm

Last week, on September 28, 2006, typhoon “Xangsane” (locally called “Milenyo” here in the Philippines), wrecked havoc in Metro Manila. It was the first time in 11 years that a strong typhoon directly passed over the metropolis. That morning, my wife and I had decided to stay home instead of going to work when we learned from the radio that Storm Signal number 3 has been raised over Metro Manila. Not exactly a super typhoon, but the winds would be strong enough. Our worry was not really how to get to work but how to get home from work. From past experience, going home during (or even after) a typhoon can be a very stressful experience. A 30 minute travel time can easily go up to 3 hours or more because … Read entire article »

Fastfood Woes

Fastfoods are now part of the Filipino diet. Jollibee being the number one fastfood chain in the country is certainly proof of this. With that of course comes the different experiences we get at these fastfood places. We get to see, meet, and deal with different people from fellow customers to the crew. … Read entire article »
